Medical

The first 3 vacancies are new opportunities to work in a community nursing school based

at Sibanor Health Clinic in the Gambia.

Our aim is to run a 2 year Government recognised basic training course  in community nursing care to give Gambian students a good grounding in nursing. We have received a letter of Government support and are now in the process of setting up the course which will use the Gambian Curriculum as its base, and will be taught in English.

 

As we’ve handed over the WEC-clinic to the local church, you would work under Gambian leadership with a mainly local team. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.  

Head of Nursing School

Responsibilities: To set up and structure the course and work with the Administrator in the selection of students.

Qualifications /Experience: Registered nurse with 5 years clinical experience and some experience of teaching and organizing training.  A teaching qualification would be advisable but not essential. Flexibility and a willingness to try new things are essential. Single or married accommodation available.

Suitable for: Anybody with the above qualifications. It would also suit a retired person. Single or married accommodation available.

Duration: A minimum of 2 years.

Nurse Tutor

Responsibilities: To assist in the teaching of the course and the development of the curriculum alongside the Head of Nursing. 

Qualifications /Experience: Registered nurse with 3 years clinical experience and some experience of teaching would be helpful. Flexibility and a willingness to try new things are essential.

Suitable for: Anybody with the above qualifications. It would also suit a retired person. Single or married accommodation available.

Duration: Commitment can be flexible but must be planned well in advance.

Administrator for the Nursing School

Responsibilities: To work with the Head of Nursing in the selection of students and organize placements within and outside the clinic, as well as the day to day running of the course.

Qualifications /Experience: An ability to work with people, enjoy challenges and be flexible are essential.

Suitable for: Anybody with the above qualifications. It would also suit a retired person. Single or married accommodation available.

Duration: A minimum of 2 years.

Doctor

Responsibilities: Doctors share responsibility for the ward and care for all the patients out-of-hours and either the general outpatient clinic or the HIV clinic for routine clinic duties. The doctors are also responsible for teaching, maintaining clinical standards in the clinic and developing relationships with other healthcare providers in the Gambia.

As we’ve handed over the WEC-clinic to the local church, you would work under Gambian leadership with a mainly local team.

Qualifications/ Experience: Doctors with some postgraduate experience are preferred as you will need to be independent when on-call and to carry leadership responsibilities. Experience in obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics or general practice is particularly helpful. A diploma in tropical medicine is helpful, but not essential.

Flexibility and a willingness to try new ways of working is essential.

Duration: Any length of time from 4 weeks to long term. Retirees are very welcome, including those who would like to work intermittently e.g. one or two months at a time on a regular basis. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Lab Technician

Responsibilities: We are looking for a lab technician to join our team to provide specific training and upgrade the skills of our local staff. The clinic provides primary health care services including antenatal, maternity, paediatric and adult medical care. There is a small ward and a specialist HIV clinic. The lab provides a basic service including measuring Hb, PCV, malaria smears, sputum smears for TB, rapid diagnostic tests for HIV and RPR, urine albumin and dipstick, and gram and India Ink stains of CSF. We also take blood for CD4 count, but these are analysed elsewhere.

Suitable for: Would also suit a person who could do intermittent short visits such as a retiree.

Qualifications/ Experience: Qualified lab technician. Flexibility and a willingness to try new ways of working is essential.

General Nurse

Responsibilities: Mainly work on the ward, but may also be involved in work in the dressing room, managing the clinic stores and administrative roles.

As we’ve handed over the WEC-clinic to the local church, you would work under Gambian leadership with a mainly local team. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.  

Qualifications/ Experience: Qualified Nurse. Flexibility and a willingness to try new ways of working is essential.

Duration: Over 6 months is most useful but any length of time acceptable. Our experience is that nurses take 6 months to feel that they are really contributing to the work here and everyone who stays for this time or less says they wish they had stayed longer.

Nurse Midwife

Responsibilities: To work alongside our locally trained Gambian midwives. Opportunities for teaching.

 self funding.  

Qualifications/ Experience: A qualified midwife with at least 1 year experience. Experience of work in a remote setting or without medical support would be helpful. Flexibility and a willingness to try new ways of working is essential.

Duration: Over 6 months is most useful but any length of time is acceptable.

Nurse Course Tutor

Responsibilities: Our aim is to run a 2 year Government recognized course using the Government Curriculum as a means to raising the standard of the overall health care provided by the Clinic. A nurse tutor would (with help from other team members), be responsible for recruiting students, organising the course, teaching the students, providing pastoral support to them and coordinating the involvement of other teachers. The nursing course also includes a component of Bible study. Our vision is to ensure our students know what the gospel is and how it differs from Islam, so that they can make an informed decision about what they believe before they complete the course. We aim to disciple any Christian students on the course.

Qualifications/ Experience: A nurse tutor with 5 years’ experience or teaching and course organization skills.

Duration: At least 2.5 years – long-term preferred. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Storekeeper for Sibanor Health Centre

Responsibilities: Duties include keeping the store in order, entering drugs and appliances received and recording all of those given out daily to the wards and outpatient clinics. Liaising with the pharmacy regarding movement of drugs. Stocking clinical rooms and helping the ward staff keep the ward stock up to date. Entering data on to stock cards and also on to the computer which has a special  database. Keeping a careful watch on stock and expiry dates. Three monthly stock takes. Helping the administration team and doctors draw up drug orders.

As we’ve handed over the WEC-clinic to the local church, you would work under Gambian leadership with a mainly local team. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.  

Besides this role, there are many opportunities to get involved with local church, youth club and village outreach.  Serve the Lord in many ways in evangelism with the local church and the clinic.

Qualifications /Experience: Responsible, organized person to run the pharmacy store at Sibanor Health Centre in rural Gambia. An orderly person capable of working on own. No previous knowledge of drugs is necessary.

Suitable for: Anybody with the above qualifications. This job has been done successfully in the past by a school leaver but a person of any age would be suitable. Single or married accommodation available.

Duration: Over 6 months is most useful but any length of time is acceptable.

Administration

Urgent : Accountant Manager /Administrator

Responsibilities: Manage the finances of our branch, WEC Gambia. This includes book-keeping and banking, overseeing the various accounts within the Gambia and overseas.

Administer the legal paperwork (visas, residential permits, etc.) for our branch members.

As the finance office is located in the WEC headquarters, you will also interact regularly with WEC Gambia members and local people, who come into the WEC office.

Qualifications / Experience: Experience in bookkeeping / accounting (we currently use TAS Books). A good level of English would be helpful. 

Duration: Minimum 6 months.This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Urgent: HQ Compound Manager

Responsibilities: We’re looking for a HQ compound manager to ensure a smooth running of our headquarters compound.

Responsibilities:

  • Have the oversight of the compound

  • Manage the employees, i.e. watchmen, gardener, maintenance staff

  • Ensure that the buildings and the compound are maintained and anything broken is repaired.

  • Work alongside the guesthouse manager (the guesthouse as well as offices and a hall are on the WEC HQ compound)

This is not a full time ministry. So depending on your gifting and calling, you could also be involved in other ministries.

Qualifications /Experience: An ability to work with people, enjoy challenges and be flexible are essential.

Suitable for: As most workers are male, a man would be better to fill this post. It would also suit a retired person. Single or married accommodation available.

Training and Support 

Trainers in Practical Skills

Responsibilities: WEC in collaboration with the evangelical church of the Gambia are establishing a training centre for practical skills. Your role would be to train young Gambians in a specific profession and help building up the skill centre. 

Suitable for:  Anyone trained or experienced in a practical profession and keen to empower Gambian youth with a skill and form them spiritually.

Qualifications/ Experience:  Trained in metalworker, woodworker, car mechanic, mason, plumber, etc.

Duration: 6 - 24 months. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Media Ministry / IT Support

Responsibilities: We’re looking for someone who is trained or experienced in the area of IT / media. We’d like to expand our media ministry, using the great tools like Smartphone, Facebook, Videoclips, Micro SD cards, Lightstream Pocket etc. to share the Good News in The Gambia.

Smartphones and Social Media are widely spread in our country – even though many people can still not read or write. It’s a great platform to make our God known to the people. Do you want to use your knowledge and gifts to share God’s love through media? Would you be willing to help us as a team and the church to grow in this area, so that we can make better use of media?
Besides this, it would be great, if you could help us as a team with our IT and Computer problems / questions.

Suitable for: Anyone trained or experienced in the area of IT / media. You could also be involved in other ministries.

Duration: At least 3 months, preferably longer. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Football Coach at Eagle Youth Center at Brikama

Responsibilities: Coaching our Eagles Football Club members, from Monday to Friday between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm

Qualifications/ Experience: Somebody who just loves football or is an experienced football coach

Suitable for: Anybody with the above qualifications, male or female. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.
