WEC is a faith-based fellowship, made up of a network of committed volunteers, and does not pay salaries. Anyone wishing to work at any of the projects below will require self funding. Join us in this faith venture, and come with, or develop a strong support base that will enable you to fulfil your calling and ministry.

Urgent Role: Guesthouse Manager

Responsibilities: Bookings of the rooms / apartments, overseeing the cleaning ladies and maintenance workers and having a general  running of the guesthouse (including finances).

Suitable for:  People who like the mixture of interacting with people and doing some office work. As it is not a full time ministry you could also be involved in other ministries. Someone with an outgoing, warm and welcome character.

Qualifications/ Experience: Good organisational skills.  Basic computer skills using Word, Excel, and e-mail. You must be able to manage a small staff in the upkeep of the guest house and be able to deal with national and international visitors on a daily basis.

Duration: Minimum 6 months. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Urgent Role: Accountant Manager /Administrator

Responsibilities: Manage the finances of our branch, WEC Gambia. This includes book-keeping and banking, overseeing the various accounts within the Gambia and overseas.

Administer the legal paperwork (visas, residential permits, etc.) for our branch members.

As the finance office is located in the WEC headquarters, you will also interact regularly with WEC Gambia members and local people, who come into the WEC office.

Qualifications / Experience: Experience in bookkeeping / accounting (we currently use TAS Books). A good level of English would be helpful. 

Duration: Minimum 6 months.This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Role:  Trainers in practical skills

Responsibilities: WEC in collaboration with the evangelical church of the Gambia are establishing a training centre for practical skills. Your role would be to train young Gambians in a specific profession and help building up the skill centre. 

Suitable for:  Anyone trained or experienced in a practical profession and keen to empower Gambian youth with a skill and form them spiritually.

Qualifications/ Experience:  Trained in metalworker, woodworker, car mechanic, mason, plumber, etc.

Duration: 6 - 24 months. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Role: Doctor

Responsibilities: Doctors share responsibility for the ward and care for all the patients out-of-hours and either the general outpatient clinic or the HIV clinic for routine clinic duties. The doctors are also responsible for teaching, maintaining clinical standards in the clinic and developing relationships with other healthcare providers in the Gambia.

As we’ve handed over the WEC-clinic to the local church, you would work under Gambian leadership with a mainly local team.

Qualifications/ Experience: Doctors with some postgraduate experience are preferred as you will need to be independent when on-call and to carry leadership responsibilities. Experience in obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics or general practice is particularly helpful. A diploma in tropical medicine is helpful, but not essential.

Flexibility and a willingness to try new ways of working is essential.

Duration: Any length of time from 4 weeks to long term. Retirees are very welcome, including those who would like to work intermittently e.g. one or two months at a time on a regular basis. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Role: Lab Technician

Responsibilities: We are looking for a lab technician to join our team to provide specific training and upgrade the skills of our local staff. The clinic provides primary health care services including antenatal, maternity, paediatric and adult medical care. There is a small ward and a specialist HIV clinic. The lab provides a basic service including measuring Hb, PCV, malaria smears, sputum smears for TB, rapid diagnostic tests for HIV and RPR, urine albumin and dipstick, and gram and India Ink stains of CSF. We also take blood for CD4 count, but these are analysed elsewhere.

Suitable for: Would also suit a person who could do intermittent short visits such as a retiree.

Qualifications/ Experience: Qualified lab technician. Flexibility and a willingness to try new ways of working is essential.

Duration: Any length of time. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Role: General Nurse

Responsibilities: Mainly work on the ward, but may also be involved in work in the dressing room, managing the clinic stores and administrative roles.

As we’ve handed over the WEC-clinic to the local church, you would work under Gambian leadership with a mainly local team. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.  

Qualifications/ Experience: Qualified Nurse. Flexibility and a willingness to try new ways of working is essential.

Duration: Over 6 months is most useful but any length of time acceptable. Our experience is that nurses take 6 months to feel that they are really contributing to the work here and everyone who stays for this time or less says they wish they had stayed longer.

Role: Nurse Midwife

Responsibilities: To work alongside our locally trained Gambian midwives. Opportunities for teaching.
As we’ve handed over the WEC-clinic to the local church, you would work under Gambian leadership with a mainly local team. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require
 self funding.  

Qualifications/ Experience: A qualified midwife with at least 1 year experience. Experience of work in a remote setting or without medical support would be helpful. Flexibility and a willingness to try new ways of working is essential.

Duration: Over 6 months is most useful but any length of time is acceptable.

Role: Nurse Tutor

Responsibilities: Our aim is to run a 2 year Government recognized course using the Government Curriculum as a means to raising the standard of the overall health care provided by the Clinic. A nurse tutor would (with help from other team members), be responsible for recruiting students, organising the course, teaching the students, providing pastoral support to them and coordinating the involvement of other teachers. The nursing course also includes a component of Bible study. Our vision is to ensure our students know what the gospel is and how it differs from Islam, so that they can make an informed decision about what they believe before they complete the course. We aim to disciple any Christian students on the course.

Qualifications/ Experience: A nurse tutor with 5 years’ experience or teaching and course organization skills.

Duration: At least 2.5 years – long-term preferred. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Media ministry / IT support

Responsibilities: We’re looking for someone who is trained or experienced in the area of IT / media. We’d like to expand our media ministry, using the great tools like Smartphone, Facebook, Videoclips, Micro SD cards, Lightstream Pocket etc. to share the Good News in The Gambia.

Smartphones and Social Media are widely spread in our country – even though many people can still not read or write. It’s a great platform to make our God known to the people. Do you want to use your knowledge and gifts to share God’s love through media? Would you be willing to help us as a team and the church to grow in this area, so that we can make better use of media?
Besides this, it would be great, if you could help us as a team with our IT and Computer problems / questions.

Suitable for: Anyone trained or experienced in the area of IT / media. You could also be involved in other ministries.

Duration: At least 3 months, preferably longer. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Home school adventure / practical work

Responsibilities: We are looking for individuals, a couple, or a family to serve together with us in The Gambia for a year! We have lived and worked here for more than 10 years, trying to demonstrate an incarnational lifestyle among a M tribe and we need others to join us! This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.  

Help is particularly needed in our home school adventure - Would you like to tutor our 3 lovely kids (ages 11,8,6) with me?! 

Assistance is also needed in our agriculture/erosion projects and in training local boys in welding and fabrication as we work alongside community concerns.

Qualifications:

  3. Willingness to live with locals and work as a team

  4. Being able to teach in English 

 Minimum Duration: 1 Year, starting August 2020
