WEC is a faith-based fellowship, made up of a network of committed volunteers, and does not pay salaries. Anyone wishing to work at any of the projects below will require self funding. The first vacancy is a new opportunities to work in a community nursing school based

at Sibanor Health Clinic in the Gambia.

Our aim is to run a 2 year Government recognised basic training course  in community nursing care to give Gambian students a good grounding in nursing. We have received a letter of Government support and are now in the process of setting up the course which will use the Gambian Curriculum as its base, and will be taught in English.

 

As we’ve handed over the WEC-clinic to the local church, you would work under Gambian leadership with a mainly local team. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Nurse Tutor

Responsibilities: Our aim is to run a 2 year Government recognized course to train Community Health Nurses. The Nursing Course also includes a component of Bible study. Our vision is to ensure our students know what the gospel is, so that they can make an informed decision about what they believe before they complete the course. We aim to discipline any Christian students on the course. A nurse tutor would (with help from other team members), be responsible for helping to organise the course, planning and producing teaching material, teaching the students, visit them while they are on attachments and providing pastoral support to them.

Besides this role, there are many opportunities to get involved with local church, youth club and village outreach. Serve the Lord in many ways in evangelism with the local church and the clinic.

Qualifications /Experience: A nurse tutor with at least 3 years' experience of teaching, or a nurse with at least 5 years post qualification experience who is interested in acquiring teaching skills. Duration: At least 6 months or willing to visit intermittently to teach relevant parts of the course. Some remote teaching from your home is a possibility. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding commitment can be flexible but must be planned well in advance.

Doctor

Responsibilities: Doctors share responsibility for the ward and care for all the patients out-of-hours and either the general outpatient clinic or the HIV clinic for routine clinic duties. The doctors are also responsible for teaching, maintaining clinical standards in the clinic and developing relationships with other healthcare providers in the Gambia.

As we’ve handed over the WEC-clinic to the local church, you would work under Gambian leadership with a mainly local team. 

Besides this role, there are many opportunities to get involved with local church, youth club and village outreach. Serve the Lord in many ways in evangelism with the local church and the clinic.

Qualifications/ Experience: Doctors with some postgraduate experience are preferred as you will need to be independent when on-call and to carry leadership responsibilities. Experience in obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics or general practice is particularly helpful. A diploma in tropical medicine is helpful, but not essential.

Flexibility and a willingness to try new ways of working is essential.

Duration: Any length of time from 4 weeks to long term. Retirees are very welcome, including those who would like to work intermittently e.g. one or two months at a time on a regular basis. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Advisor to Laboratory staff

Responsibilities: We are looking for an experienced technician to join our team in an advisory role to provide specific training and upgrade the skills of our local staff on an intermittent basis. The clinic provides primary health care services including antenatal, maternity, paediatric, HIV and adult medical care. There is a small ward and a specialist HIV clinic. The lab provides a basic service including measuring Hb, PCV, malaria smears, sputum smears for TB, rapid diagnostic tests for HIV and RPR, CD4 count, Sickle cell solubility test, point of care creatinine, urine albumin and dipstick, and gram and Indian Ink stains of CSF. We also take blood for viral load, but these are analysed elsewhere.

Suitable for: Would suit a person who could do intermittent short visits of a few weeks such as a retiree.

Qualifications/ Experience: Qualified lab technician with several years of experience. Flexibility and a willingness to try new ways of working is essential.

Duration: Four to six weeks at a time. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Storekeeper for Sibanor Health Centre

Responsibilities: Duties include keeping the store in order, entering drugs and appliances received and recording all of those given out daily to the wards and outpatient clinics. Liaising with the pharmacy regarding movement of drugs. Stocking clinical rooms and helping the ward staff keep the ward stock up to date. Entering data on to stock cards and also on to the computer which has a special  database. Keeping a careful watch on stock and expiry dates. Three monthly stock takes. Helping the administration team and doctors draw up drug orders.

Qualifications /Experience: An orderly person capable of working on own. No previous knowledge of drugs is necessary.

Suitable for: Anybody with the above qualifications. This job has been done successfully in the past by a school leaver but a person of any age would be suitable. Single or married accommodation available.

Duration: At least 6 months.

Teachers, Helper, Assistant Teacher

​

Teacher or Helper in the Christian Pre-School in Sibanor

Responsibilities: In the morning you will lead a devotion for the teachers or the singing or share a story with the children. The teachers share these three tasks in turns. Afterwards you can support the teacher in one class or teach by yourself. Possible subjects are Jolly Phonics, reading, writing, Mathematics, English, Arts and Craft, Physical education, Health and Science.

Qualifications /Experience: It is helpful when you are already a teacher. It is also fine when you would like to teach children and you are open to learning by doing. A good level of English is very helpful.

Suitable for: Anybody who has a heart for children, patience and is able to teach them.

Duration: At least one academic year.

Assistant Teacher / Teacher of various subjects

Responsibilities: Quite flexible, any of the following could be his /her responsibilities:

• Teaching of Christian Religious Studies / Teaching of Music / Teaching of creative Arts

• Help set up a School library and run it.

• Reinforcement lessons on reading.

Qualifications /Experience: :

• Must be able to speak, read and write the English Language

• Must love children.

• Must be ready to work in a team

Duration: At least one academic year.

Base: Wellingara Reach Education Centre

Teacher for After School Studies

Responsibilities: To teach children English and Mathematic after school (primary 1-6 grade and nursery ages) in Sibanor. Besides this, you can be involved in running a kids club, church related ministries etc as time allows.

Qualifications /Experience: Teacher/ a good level of English.

Suitable for: Anyone experienced in teaching children and also with the above qualifications.

Duration: At least six months, preferably longer. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Base: Sibanor

 

Homeschool Teacher 

Responsibilities: To teach and supervise 3 (three) missionary kids in Up-Country/ a rural setting.

 Qualifications /Experience: 

• Must be able to speak, read and write the English Language 

• Must love children. 

• Must be ready to work in a team 

Duration: At least one academic year. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.

Base: Up-Country/rural setting, Basse, Upper River Region.

Training, Media and Support

 

Social Worker/Consultant/Psychologist/Parents

Responsibility: Awareness work in churches, supporting and counseling families and children, offering training on various topics like foster care, child protection, trauma care or community care.

Qualification/Experience: Anyone who is experienced in working with children and families. If you are not trained, you should be willing to learn. 

Suitable for: Anybody who is self-confident to offer training or counseling. You should love children and want to see them grow up in families. You are able to work independent and in a team.

Duration: At least one year

Base: Coastal region

Media Ministry / IT Support

Responsibilities: We’re looking for someone who is trained or experienced in the area of IT / media. We’d like to expand our media ministry, using the great tools like Smartphone, Facebook, Videoclips, Micro SD cards, Lightstream Pocket etc. to share the Good News in The Gambia.

Smartphones and Social Media are widely spread in our country – even though many people can still not read or write. It’s a great platform to make our God known to the people. Do you want to use your knowledge and gifts to share God’s love through media? Would you be willing to help us as a team and the church to grow in this area, so that we can make better use of media?
Besides this, it would be great, if you could help us as a team with our IT and Computer problems / questions.

Suitable for: Anyone trained or experienced in the area of IT / media. You could also be involved in other ministries.

Duration: At least 3 months, preferably longer. This role is on a voluntary basis, so it is unpaid and will require self funding.  

Base: WEC Guest House and Literacy Centre.

Volunteer at Brikama

 

Assistant Pastor

Responsibility: 1. Leading the Bible study.

    2. Preaching regularly on Sunday service.

Qualification/Experience: We prefer to have someone with a diploma from a Bible school but it’s enough to have someone with experience of leading a small group at church.

Suitable for: Someone who loves young people and has a passion for evangelism.

Duration: From three months to two years.

Base: Brikama, Eagles Youth Centre

Football Coach

Responsibility:  1. Leading football training from Monday to Friday afternoon.

     2. Coaching during tournaments and help organize them.

Qualification/Experience: We prefer to have a former footballer, but it’s enough to have someone loves football.

Suitable for: Someone who loves young people and has a passion for evangelism.

Duration: From three months to two years.

Teacher at Eagles Youth Centre

Responsibility:  1. Teaching Math, English and other school subjects.

     2. Help teach and organize the summer camp (July to August).

Qualification/Experience: We prefer to have someone with a diploma for teaching but it’s also enough to have someone that is able to teach Math, English or other subjects for 7th to 12th grade students.

Suitable for: Someone who loves young people and has a passion for evangelism.

Duration: From three months to two years.
